Microsoft to expand its base, plans to open Windows stores in India
Microsoft has announced that it is planning to open Windows Stores in India. There is no specific information has been given as to when and where these stores would open, at this time. With the opening of these stores, Microsoft aims at giving it’s customers a niche space where they can get a hands-on experience of any/all of their favorite Windows-running gadgets.
Chakrapani Gollapali, General Manager, Consumer Group Channels made one thing very clear that these stores will not be brand new standalones. Instead, they will be setup within large multi-brand showrooms or malls. These stores promise to provide a complete hands on experience for the customers who wish to experience the hardware and software.
Conclusion:
This move shows the prominence that the Indian consumer electronics market is gaining at the global level. Also they must have considered making neat profits after seeing developments of other undertakings like Google’s Android OS which was supported by other companies like Samsung. Android is also the platform of choice for other large Indian companies like Micromax, Lava, Xolo, Karbonn and Spice. Coincidentally, a couple of days ago even Google had announced that it would open Android stores across the country called Android Nation. These stores were also envisioned with the same idea to give users a hands on experience of Android OS across various devices. So now it is more like a competition within the two rivals gearing up to sate gadget hungry population. Let’s see who makes it in first and who stays on to capture the crowds’ attention.

Nokia worried over possible Microsoft Surface smartphone
Nokia is losing sleep over the possibility of Microsoft introducing its own line of Windows Phone OS based smartphones. Microsoft displeased its OEM partners when it announced its Surface tablet, its first foray into the PC/tablet hardware industry. With the release of Windows Phone 8, which is closely tied in to their desktop OS, it is widely speculated that Microsoft may release a Surface smartphone at some point in the future.
In a recent Securities and Exchange (SEC) filing (Form 20-F) made by Nokia, the Finnish handset maker shows the concern that the company has about the possibility of it having to face Microsoft as a rival in the mobile phone business.
“Microsoft may make strategic decisions or changes that may be detrimental to us. For example, in addition to the Surface tablet, Microsoft may broaden its strategy to sell other mobile devices under its own brand, including smartphones,” the company wrote in the filing. “This could lead Microsoft to focus more on their own devices and less on mobile devices of other manufacturers that operate on the Windows Phone platform, including Nokia.”
It is not yet clear whether Microsoft will be releasing a self-branded smartphone, but developmental models have already surfaced (pun intended). The home-grown device is rumored to sport a display between 4-inches and 5-inches, and will be competing against Apple’s and Samsung’s flagships.

Samsung smartphone with 4G LTE heading towards India, to be priced around $100
Samsung is said to be in talks with Reliance Industries (RIL) to bring LTE over high-speed 4G networks across India. The Korean giant is planning to offer entry-level 4G smartphones at a little over $100 (~ Rs 5,500) for use with RIL’s voice and internet services.
Samsung’s 3G-enabled phones can already be found in the market for around the same price. The entry-level 4G-enabled smartphones will most probably be sold with data packages starting for as low as Rs. 100. According to the source, even high-end smartphones will be made available at minimum down-payments and EMIs will be incorporated in subsequent bills with no interest rate added.
The network is planning to soft launch the service in Mumbai and Delhi by mid-2013 and a formal launch is set to be announced later this year.
Sources in the know told Times Of India:
“Samsung will not be just another vendor to RIL supplying handsets as it was when Reliance Infocomm was launched in 2002. They are seeking a much broader role. A possible joint venture could also be in the offering.” Reliance itself is not averse to the joint venture model these days, unlike in the past.
The deal will likely propel Samsung to capture the third biggest mobile market in the world, and also showcase its abilities in the US market as well. The last time Samsung made a deal with Reliance, its margins were squeezed dry. But now it is a company three times bigger than RIL in terms of sales and four times larger in terms of net profits. Perhaps a testimony to the fact that companies investing on product research and development always come ahead in the end.

Apple’s market cap falls below $400 billion for first time since January 2012
Apple’s market cap dropped below $400 billion in early trading on Monday. The market cap, which assesses Apple’s total value of issued shares, first passed $400 billion in the month of January last year. The Cupertino giant’s market cap hit a record $392.2 billion when the iPhone 4S launched in 2011. From then onwards until recently, it’s been a dream run for the company. It quickly rose to $500 billion in February last year and then hit the $650 billion mark in September 2012.
Apple’s market cap and stock has dipped in recent months since the iPhone 5 was launched. Investors are a worried lot about the company’s profit margin, upcoming products and innovation, and an overabundance of cash. The effective value of Apple’s non-cash operations seems low at $260 billion compared to their $140 billion in cash reserves. Google’s market cap on the other hand is now at $268.44 billion, with just over $45 billion in cash.
Apple is currently looking at new product lines to increase its market presence. The two most expected products are television and a smartwatch running on their iOS mobile platform. It is imminent that Apple will be releasing a new product soon, but it remains to be seen how the market reacts to it.
Apple’s market cap rose again and sat at $420.5 billion at the time of this writing.

LG buys WebOS from HP, plans to resurrect it for smart TVs
LG Electronics has decided to acquire WebOS from Hewlett-Packard. The South-Korean electronic giant wants to use the operating system in its smart televisions, and has expressed no plans of resurrecting it as a mobile OS. LG’s deal with HP includes obtaining the source code for WebOS, related documentation, engineering talent, and related WebOS websites. LG will also get HP’s licenses for use with its WebOS products, and patents HP obtained from Palm.
“It creates a new path for LG to offer an intuitive user experience and Internet services across a range of consumer electronics devices,” said Skott Ahn, president and chief technology officer of LG Electronics Inc.
WebOS was a great operating system from Palm that showed a lot of promise, but HP mismanaged it after the buyout. The death of WebOS as a mobile OS was predicted much earlier, when HP opted to rest it in the open-source necropolis. LG has expressed no intent to use WebOS for its smartphones, with Android being its mobile operating system of choice.
LG will use the power of WebOS in its future televisions. LG has given out a statement saying that the WebOS team will make up the “heart and soul” of the new LG Silicon Valley Lab. LG has also promised that it would continue to support existing Palm users.

PayPal Rolling Reserve Irks Many Business Owners
PayPal Defines a Reserve as:
Rolling Reserve:Synopsis directly from PayPal website and PayPal blog:
We'll hold your reserve on a rolling schedule. This means a percentage of the money you receive each day is held, and then released later. For example, your reserve may be set at 10% and held for a 90-day rolling period. So we'll hold 10% of the payments you receive on the first day until day 91, 10% of your second day's payments until day 92, and so on.
Minimum Reserve:
A minimum reserve is the total amount of money you need to keep in reserve. For example, your reserve may be set at $5,000.00, which means we'll hold 10% of each day's received payments (on a rolling basis) until you reach that level.
- PayPal may require that a small percentage of some of our sellers’ payment volume (from 5% to 20%) be held in their account for a period of time (30-90 day), sort of like a security deposit to cover future chargebacks and reversals.
- To determine when to place a reserve, PayPal looks at the merchants risk factors - things like industry categories that have higher-than-average chargebacks, or sellers who are new to PayPal.
- PayPal will reassess risk factors periodically, and if it is determined that the risk has gone down in certain seller accounts, they will release the reserve.
- "We're requiring reserves for a very small percentage of sellers – currently less than 1%." Bill Clark, PayPal Risk Team Analyst
PayPal is covering potential payment reversals or chargebacks if merchants don't have enough funds in their PayPal balance to do so. When sellers don’t have the funds to cover their transaction liabilities, PayPal then becomes responsible for reimbursing buyers.
Running the Numbers:
The end of the second quarter (June 30) for eBay/PayPal, may help explain the timing of this reserve policy. With a new financial quarter, the possibililty exists for new revenue. Utilizing information from Event Horizon and eBay's SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) filing, 23 October 2008 10-Q Quarterly Report Form 10-Q, the following is the worse case (for sellers or best case for eBay/PayPay) calculation of "1%" per quarter.
- Active eBay users affected: 830,000
- Active registered PayPal accounts affected: 548,000
- Net total payment volume, HELD: $115,690,000
- PayPal's revenue in this case would be the interest on $450 million per year. Plus incidental fees.
Are you experiencing a hold on your PayPal funds as well? Do you think this is a good decision on their part? What other options are you considering using? Voice your opinion!
Improving Your Online Business Relationships
Be Professional: Most online businesses require merely a laptop, as well as internet and phone connection to be operational. Despite the low starting cost, it is important to remain professional and business like in all your operations. Make sure that you set regular timings for your work and strictly adhere to them. Also, ensure that any deviation from these hours is communicated to your clients, preferably well in advance.
Communication is the Key: As with any kind of business, it is important to interact and communicate with your clients to improve business relationships. It is important to return messages, where you are unavailable at the time of the call or receipt of the message. Create a policy for immediate return of messages as soon as you see them, so that your clients feel valued.
Be Realistic: It is important to be absolutely realistic in your work and approach clients accordingly. In other words, do not under-promise and over-deliver or vice versa as this could put off clients completely. Whilst the first situation may not put your client off immediately, it will lead to dissatisfaction in the long run. Make sure that your deadlines are flexible without being too lax. Along with realistic time schedules, it is important to have realistic budgets in mind before entering into any business. Moreover, it is important to communicate this schedule and budget to your clients and agree explicitly to the same.
Set Milestones: Every project that is undertaken should be ideally split into smaller achievable targets, which can be called milestones. Milestones will describe the progress of your work to the clients. This way, the clients can evaluate the progress and accordingly pay the contractor, which actually helps in the long run.
Project Management Tools and their Uses: When dealing with online businesses, it is important to ensure that you are familiar with the various tools and software, which can help you to conduct your online business with ease. This will not only save time but will considerably improve the quality of work.
Trust is important: When you work with external contractors for completing a particular job, it is important to trust them and give them adequate freedom to complete the job. However, this does not mean that you cannot verify their credentials before handing over the job. In fact, both partners of any business deal should ideally verify each other's credentials before entering into any kind of business.
These are the key elements that you should keep in mind when entering into any online business relationship in order to improve the same. A final key factor that you should definitely practice is the art of saying no. When you accept deadlines, ensure that there are no drastic changes to it. This will help both parties in the long run and help better the business relationship.
