France Telecom deploy world’s first live 400 Gbps per wavelength optical link

With the advent of the Internet, consumption of data by consumers has grown by leaps and bounds over the years and this has given the telecom companies a reason to revamp their networks to keep up with the increasing demand for the bandwidth. And now France telecom has made a stride forward with a 400 Gbps/wavelength optical link for the first time, to make history. Following a successful field trial, a 400 Gbps wavelength optical link is now operational between Paris and Lyon.

This is a groundbreaking milestone for long-distance terrestrial network technology and with a capacity four times higher than the maximum bandwidth currently available and using 44 wavelengths, the new optical link can transmit up to 17.6 Terabits per second (Tbps) of traffic in total. A mind-blowing development over any present network technology.

For France Telecom, owner of the mobile operator Orange, the three-month pilot of the 400Gbps link will enable it to look into the trial-run of the high-speed optical networking technology and make a decision on how and when to make this 400Gbps link available across its entire network. According to Olivier Gombert, director of the transmission factory at France Telecom, there is a lot of scope for improvement and this pilot run will give them an idea of what needs to be modified before releasing it to the world.This feat reflects France Telecom-Orange’s commitment to sustainable development of its network performance to meet the growing demand for higher bandwidths and additional flexibility needs for its huge market of consumers and business customers. Any wider release of 400Gbps technology will depend not only on the outcome of the pilot but also on customers’ interest.

RENATER, the Public Interest Group that manages the telecommunications network for “Technology, Teaching and Research” institutions in France and that is a customer of Orange Business Services, will be the first to test the functionality of this development in a day-to-day situation. Patrick Donath, MD of Renater said, “This pilot phase also aims to test the latest switching equipment supplied by major OEMs on a network running at this capacity and will enable us to anticipate the architecture of Renater’s network in the coming years. A 400Gbps network is an important step forward for the networks and research projects of tomorrow.”

With this innovative and energy-saving technology in trial run, one only hopes that it becomes a roaring success and helps quench the thirst for higher bandwidths all across the globe.

How often Outlook checks Gmail for New Mail?

If you have connected your Gmail account to Outlook over POP3, you may have noticed that emails arriving in your Gmail mailbox are delivered to your Outlook mailbox after a little wait.
The support pages do not say how often Outlook.com checks your Gmail.com account for new emails but you can easily find a clue in your Gmail mailbox itself.

How frequently Outlook connects to Gmail?

Open Gmail and click the link at the bottom that says “Account Activity” – look for entries that read POP3 with location set as United States and IP addresses in the 66.55.41.1 – 66.55.41.255 range. The time difference between any two consecutive connection attempts in the activity log is the rate at which the Mail Fetcher program of Outlook is connecting to your Gmail account.
In my case, this gap in fetching emails is always 30 minutes.
Bonus Tip: You cannot force Outlook to check your Gmail account on-demand but there’s a workaround. Go to your Outlook Mail Settings -> Send Receive from other Email Accounts, Edit the connected Gmail account and save without making any changes. Outlook will then attempt to connect your Gmail account again for new messages.
Alternatively, instead of using POP3, you can setup auto-forward in Gmail and in that case, the Gmail message will instantly get delivered to your Outlook mailbox.

Best Tips for Buying Domains through Google Apps

When you buy a web domain through Google Docs, you get personalized email addresses (like me@mydomain.com instead of me@gmail.com) plus you can setup a quick website on Google Sites without having to pay for web hosting. The domains are registered privately meaning others cannot see your contact information in the public WHOIS database.
Google Apps comes in two flavors – the free edition (where you just pay for the domain name) and the business edition (where you pay for the domain and the number of users).

Tip #1: How to Sign-up for Google Apps Free Edition

For business reasons, the Google Apps homepage includes no mention of the free edition but you can use this secret link to  go straight to the sign-up form. The link  is otherwise hidden under the “Pricing” section of the Google Apps website.

Tip #2: Country Domains are Relatively Cheap at Google Apps

You can now buy country-specific domains (like .in, .org.in and even .cc) through Google Apps and the deal could be better than buying directly through the registrar. For instance, Google offers the India specific .in domain for $8 per year while GoDaddy charges $17/year for the same TLD while Indian registrars charge around $10 for .in domains.

Tip #3: Buy Unsupported Domains through Google Apps

Google has made one important change recently. They no longer offer global TLDs like .org or .net for purchase with the free edition of Google Apps. You can buy a .com domain as before but for a .org or .co web address, you have to sign-up for the Google Apps business edition.
Going back to the above chart, the domain extensions highlighted in red are only available for purchase with the business edition of Google Apps.

Here’s a simple workaround though. When you are signing up for the free version of Google Apps but need a domain name that is only available in the business edition of Google Apps, take this approach – sign-up for the business edition of Google Apps (sign-up link) and once the domain is registered, just cancel your subscription.
Google won’t charge your credit for 30 days and if you cancel during this period, your Business edition will simply be downgraded to the Free edition of Google Apps.

If you are unable to access a particular website, either due to government censorship (for instance, IMDB.com is blocked in China) or because your employer has blocked the site (hoping that it will make people more productive), you can use an online proxy server to quickly and easily bypass the filters.
There are tons of proxies available online and most of them are free (supported by advertising), but if you would like to keep things under your own control, without revealing your tracks to a third-party website, you can build your own proxy site using WordPress.

Turn your WordPress Site into a Proxy Server

It takes less than a minute to set things up and all you need is a website (or blog) running WordPress.org software and the free RePress plugin - ‘repress’ here is short for ‘repressive’ as in ‘repressive regimes.’
Step 1: Make sure that Permalinks are enabled for your WordPress installation. Open your WordPress admin dashboard, choose Settings -> Permalinks and select any format for your Permalinks other than the default option. Save the changes.
Step 2: From the dashboard itself, go to Plugins -> Add New and search for Repress in the WordPress plugin repository. Install and activate the plugin.
Step 3: Next we need to whitelist website domains that should be accessible though our new WordPress based proxy server. Go to Settings -> Repress and add one or more domain names that you would like to access from work. Save.

Your proxy server is now ready for use. If your WordPress site URL is abc.com, you can access a site like nytimes.com using the URL http://abc.com/proxy/nytimes.com. All the internal links on the NYT website are rewritten to be served though the proxy site.

Internally, this proxy server is based on the open-source PHPProxy project but it is easier to deploy since it uses the WordPress plugin architecture. The proxied web pages are served with the NoIndex, NoFollow header and hence search engines are unlikely to notice them.
That said, it might be a good idea to deploy this on a separate WordPress install as too many proxy requests may put strain on your main website.

Open Web Pages in Google Chrome for iOS [Bookmarklet]

The Google Chrome browser is now available for your iPhone and iPad but unfortunately, you do not have the option to set Chrome as your default web browser on the iOS device. Thus, if you have happen to click a link in an email message, the corresponding web page will always open in the mobile Safari browser and you cannot override this default setting.
If you would however like to send a web page, that is open inside Safari, to the Chrome Browser, there is an easy way.
Tap the address bar in Safari browser, navigate to the beginning of the URL and replace the location protocol http with googlechrome. Then tap “Go” and the web page will automatically open inside the Google Chrome app.

Chrome for iOS supports googlechrome (for http) and googlechromes (for https) URI schemes that app developers may use to determine whether Chrome is available on the iOS device or not. More technical details are available at dev.google.com via John Gruber.

Open in Chrome – The Bookmarklet

There’s an easier workaround as well. You can install the “Open in Chrome” bookmarklet in mobile Safari and you will then be able to send any web page from the Safari browser to the Chrome app with a single tap. Here’s how:
Step 1. Open this page on your iPhone /iPad and add it to your Safari bookmarks.
Step 2: Select and copy the following JavaScript code to your iOS clipboard.

Step 3. Open the bookmarks menu in Safari and tap the “Edit” button. Next tap the Web Page that you have added in step 1.

How to Increase Browsing Speed While Downloading

When it comes to downloading large files from internet, you may leave them to download it using some download managers or torrent clients other than your web browser. The problem get notices when you tries to browse web pages while downloading files from internet. The browsing 'll get slow down as the download manager or torrent downloader consumes greater part of your internet bandwidth. The case is even worse if your connection speed is low. There's not much we can do to increase browsing speed while downloading files as it totally depends on internet connection speed but here's some tips that might help to browse without much delay.

1. Use NetBalancer to shape your traffic. 

Consider the case of downloading a huge torrent file, it might take a few hours to complete the download. Usually, torrent clients like uTorrent are standalone applications like internet download managers. NetBalancer is a freeware that can prioritize the bandwidth allocation to various applications that uses the internet connection. 

1. Download and install NetBalancer 

2. Open Netbalancer (assuming your browser and uTorrent already running)

3. In the application, it shows the list of processes that shares the internet connection. To increase upload/download priority for Google chrome, right click on anyone of chrome.exe and click 'High' under both Upload and Download. 

4. Similarly, you need to lower the bandwidth allocation to uTorrent. Right click on uTorrent.exe and click low under both Upload and Download. After you're done it may look like the below screenshot. From now, you must see some improvement in browsing using chrome.

In this fashion you can pull down the bandwidth usage of other applications like internet download managers.

2. Set download limit in Applications

Another way to improve brwsing speed is to set  download limit in applications. For example, if your internet connection gives you a maximum download speed of  64KB/s just put the dsownload limit to 4-50KB/s. Almost all download managers and uTorrent has an option to set download limit to a predetermined level.

Of late, we had talked alot of dropbox related apps such as hosting your blog on dropbox, Send android photos to dropbox instantly when you snap a photo and few more interesting apps. Today we have got an interesting app that allows you to automatically save videos from Youtube in Dropbox.
By default, the YouTube has this feature called ‘Watch later’ that allows you to save a video in your ‘Watch later’ list and you can catch them up later when ever you get time. This is slightly different, it sends the video to your dropbox, so that you can access them whenever and where ever you need it.

Videodropper is a simple app lets you send YouTube videos directly to your Dropbox folder, so that you can watch them later at your leisure. It is very useful when YouTube is blocked in your place. All your photos are now backed up to dropbox. If you wish to stop the process, simply delete the Dropbox folder /Apps/YourTrove. This will also prevent any future files from being saved.
