LG Electronics has decided to acquire WebOS from Hewlett-Packard. The South-Korean electronic giant wants to use the operating system in its smart televisions, and has expressed no plans of resurrecting it as a mobile OS. LG’s deal with HP includes obtaining the source code for WebOS, related documentation, engineering talent, and related WebOS websites. LG will also get HP’s licenses for use with its WebOS products, and patents HP obtained from Palm.
“It creates a new path for LG to offer an intuitive user experience and Internet services across a range of consumer electronics devices,” said Skott Ahn, president and chief technology officer of LG Electronics Inc.
WebOS was a great operating system from Palm that showed a lot of promise, but HP mismanaged it after the buyout. The death of WebOS as a mobile OS was predicted much earlier, when HP opted to rest it in the open-source necropolis. LG has expressed no intent to use WebOS for its smartphones, with Android being its mobile operating system of choice.
LG will use the power of WebOS in its future televisions. LG has given out a statement saying that the WebOS team will make up the “heart and soul” of the new LG Silicon Valley Lab. LG has also promised that it would continue to support existing Palm users.
