Nokia is losing sleep over the possibility of Microsoft introducing its own line of Windows Phone OS based smartphones. Microsoft displeased its OEM partners when it announced its Surface tablet, its first foray into the PC/tablet hardware industry. With the release of Windows Phone 8, which is closely tied in to their desktop OS, it is widely speculated that Microsoft may release a Surface smartphone at some point in the future.
In a recent Securities and Exchange (SEC) filing (Form 20-F) made by Nokia, the Finnish handset maker shows the concern that the company has about the possibility of it having to face Microsoft as a rival in the mobile phone business.
“Microsoft may make strategic decisions or changes that may be detrimental to us. For example, in addition to the Surface tablet, Microsoft may broaden its strategy to sell other mobile devices under its own brand, including smartphones,” the company wrote in the filing. “This could lead Microsoft to focus more on their own devices and less on mobile devices of other manufacturers that operate on the Windows Phone platform, including Nokia.”
It is not yet clear whether Microsoft will be releasing a self-branded smartphone, but developmental models have already surfaced (pun intended). The home-grown device is rumored to sport a display between 4-inches and 5-inches, and will be competing against Apple’s and Samsung’s flagships.
