Asus has announced a 7-inch tablet dubbed Fonepad at the Mobile World Congress. The device runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, and is powered by Intel’s Atom Z2420 processor with support for 3G voice and mobile data.
The Fonepad sports a 1.2 MP front-facing camera and a 3 MP camera on the rear. The display resolution is 1280 x 800 pixels, and Asus has equipped 1GB of RAM, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU and HSPA+ radio with its latest tablet. It can also be considered as a very big phablet, as it is capable of being used as a smartphone too.
The 420mAh battery on this tablet is rated to run for around 9 hours, a decent figure. Asus will release two variants of this tablet: 8GB and 16GB versions in titanium gray or champagne gold colors, both with a microSD slot to expand the storage through external memory. The interesting facet of this announcement is the launch date and price of the device. Asus has said that the Fonepad will be made available in March, and the pricing starts at just $249 (~Rs. 13,406/-).
The price is a steal for a device such as this, especially when it’s from a reputed manufacturer such as Asus. It has the potential to cannibalise the generic 7-inchers rampant in the Indian market, whose build quality and timely software updates are always a concern for the customers. It remains to be seen how Asus prices the tablet in India, if at all it plans to release it here.
