In the earlier versions of windows, the programs or folders you opened were show up in the taskbar with a label exhibiting the name of the program or the folder etc. But in Windows 7, the taskbar is set to hide labels of opened threads and they're set to combine windows of same type. However the new system is opt for users who opens many programs and folders such that they wont clutter to make it difficult to pick the desired one. ie, more buttons can be placed in the taskbar simultaneously.
By the way, you can change this new set-up to the old one by a simple step. Right click on taskbar and click Properties. there you may see a drop down box with a label Taskbar Buttons: It is set to "Always cobine, hide labels" by default. You need to change it into Combine When Taskbar is Full or to Never Combine. That's it.
