Corning, the makers of Gorilla Glass, has said that it would probably take at least three years before any major company would start utilising their new Willow Glass material for curved or flexible displays.
The main concern as of yet is that companies are yet to come up with ideas that can take full advantage of the Willow glass, which would allow them to make curved or flexible display products.
The 161-year-old Corning had its luck changed after smartphone sales boomed all across the world, and demand for its Gorilla Glass displays surged to an epic high. Sales of Gorilla Glass have surged 44 percent to reach $1 billion last year.
“People are not accustomed to glass you roll up,” James Clappin (president of Corning Glass Technologies) said after an event in China, marking the opening of an $800 million factory for liquid-crystal-display glass. “The ability of people to take it and use it to make a product is limited.”
The New York-based company is currently producing the flexible glass and also simultaneously teaching its “very big name” customers how to handle the new material.
Not everything is lost though. The Willow glass will make an appearance this year as a flexible barrier for solar panels or as a thin film behind some touch panels. Corning has already sent out samples of the flexible glass to makers of phones, tablets and TVs.
