ZTE has launched its 5.7-inch Grand Memo smartphone at the Mobile World Congress yesterday. The Grand Memo doesn’t lie with its name and is a very big smartphone, also called a phablet. The phone sports only a 720p display, unlike the other recent 1080p device announcements. The pixel density on the screen is still fairly decent at 257ppi for general usage
The Grand Memo is equipped with 1GB of RAM and is the first device powered by the new quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, clocked at 1.7GHz. The phablet will land with 16GB of internal storage and Android 4.1.2 on-board. There’s a 13 MP camera module on the rear and a large 3,200mAh battery encased in its plastic shell. The device supports LTE and is packed into a fairly thin 8.5mm package.
The Android included on the Grand Memo is heavily customised by ZTE to differentiate itself from the other offerings. ZTE has skinned almost every section of Android, with a custom launcher, messaging, contacts, and dialer. Unlocking the device can be done in either two ways: you tap and hold the screen for a few seconds or do a “pinch out” gesture that brings up a number of shortcuts. For the dialer, ZTE has skinned in a feature that allows users to attach the dialer to either edge of the screen for single-handed dialing, the same feature we’ve seen in Samsung’s Galaxy Note series.
The Grand Memo will launch in China in March, with a European release to follow later this year. No word on price just yet, or an India release, but we might just have to hold our breath until any such announcements are made official.
Update: Qualcomm has sent out an official press release that the Grand Memo actually uses the Snapdragon 600, not the 800 that was mentioned during ZTE’s event.
