Valentine’s Day 2013 ideas: What to do in London: If you can’t bear the crassness of hauling your Valentine up the London Eye, or making them walk across bridges to stare at the Thames all evening this February 14th, take your pick from our list of ideas for a slightly more original Valentine’s Day.
10. Take your date to prom
Shoreditch hangout The Book Club is hosting a prom-inspired Valentine’s party, where you can head for an evening of classic games likes Seven Minutes in Heaven and Beer Pong, as well as teen movies and plenty of American-style food. Dress up as your favourite ‘teen movie stereotypes’ and you and your date could be in with a chance of being crowned Prom King and Queen at the end of the night. The best bit approximately it? It only costs a fiver. And they say romance is dead…
9. Go out for dinner… in the dark
For something a little different, try Dans Le Noir, a restaurant at which you eat your meal immersed in total darkness. Yes, it’s more than a little gimmicky, yet the food is decent and if you absolutely must do the Valentine’s ‘thing’ of going out for dinner on the day itself, there are much worse places to do it than DLN. Like Pizza Express, for example.
8. Jazz at the Albert Hall
The Albert Hall has a very special offer on this February 14th, when for £60 you and your lucky Valentine can enjoy a late night jazz session with Nicola Emmanuelle. Also on the menu are a complimentary bottle of Mercier Champagne, a sharing platter and some chocolate truffles.
7. Read other people’s love letters
If you’re secure enough in your relationship to take your loved one to see an exhibition that will put all your romantic gestures to shame, head to the Caird Library, which will display a unique collection of historical love letters not usually available to the public. The £96 entrance fee includes a three-course meal for two – complete with a glass each of Prosecco – at the 16 Seconds West Brasserie, where lovers will be serenaded by a romantic musical accompaniment.
6. Sleep under the stars
OK, so it’s not so much ‘sleeping’ as ‘standing’ and it’s not so much ‘stars’ as ‘pictures of stars’. But for standing-under-a-picture-of-stars experiences, the Planetarium can’t be beat. This year, couples can go along to the Royal Observatory for £28 and be treated to a cupid-themed exploration of the ‘passionate side of astronomy’. As if that wasn’t romantic enough, all ticket-holders will get a glass of bubbly and each couple will be presented with a red rose.
5. See a movie
The huge film out the week of Valentine’s Day is likely to be Hitchcock, yet seek out London’s independent cinemas and there’s a wealth of more eclectic choices for you to see on the huge screen. If film classics Breakfast At Tiffany’s (on at the Prince Charles, Leicester Square) and Casablanca (Covent Garden Hotel) don’t take your fancy, why not indulge in what the New York Times called ‘one of the most satisfying love stories you’ll ever see’ by watching Weekend at the BFI?
4. Write a message in the sky
Guests at hip new-money hangout Kensington Roof Gardens this V-Day can pay £75 (or £65 if you’re a member) to party with the well-heeled, listen to live jazz and watch in-house fireworks. But perhaps the biggest draw of all will be the opportunity to have a message to your loved one projected onto the London night sky using the Roof Garden’s multicoloured laser system.
3. Go Kayakying
Nothing says ‘romance’ quite like being immersed in a filthy, freezing body of water in mid-February, so The Love Float seems the perfect way to celebrate your love this year. For £75 per couple, Kayaking London will plonk you and your other half in double kayaks and then it’s up to you to make your way from Chelsea to Big Ben, where you’ll be greeted with a hot chocolate and a photographic memoir of the occasion.
2. Watch someone take their clothes off
If you really must go out for dinner, spice it up a bit and mix in some burlesque. Stoke Newington haunt Trangallan is offering a a three-course menu for £35, with plenty of entertainment from cabaret stars Amber Topaz, Lady Cave and Sophie St Villier. A night guaranteed to be so thrilling they’re running it twice – once on Valentine’s Day itself and then again on Saturday, February 16.
1. Whisper sweet nothings
Ready to commit to a lifetime of Valentine’s celebrations? Then head to St Paul’s and whisper the huge question into the dome, where your other half can stand on the opposite side of the Whispering Gallery and (hopefully) hear your proposal. And if marriage isn’t quite on the cards at this point, you could always whisper something a little less wholesome into the dome…
